Insa, multe femei nu au norocul de a li se descoperi boala intr-un stadiu incipient.S-a constatat ca foarte multe dintre cazurile de cancer cervical sunt provocate de HPV (human papiloma virus), un virus care infecteaza pielea si mucoasele corpului uman. S-au descoperit aproximativ 130 de tulpini ale HPV, dintre care 30-40 se transmit prin contact sexual si infecteaza zona anala si genitala. Ceea ce face ca acesta sa fie cel mai comun virus cu transmitere sexuala. Uneori, cei infectati cu HPV nu prezinta niciun simptom. Alteori virusul duce la condilomatoza (negi genitali), sau cancer de col.Numai patru dintre tulpinile HPV pot duce la cancer cervical, insa impotriva lor, avem astazi la dispozitie un vaccin, unul controversat ce-i drept, dar care ar putea salva vietile a milioane de femei.
