Customers couldn't wait to get inside.Crowds gathered outside Mumbai's famous Cafe Leopold, reopening its bullet-scarred shutters for the first time since Wednesday's devastating attacks on the Indian city which killed nearly 200 people.The cafe, which sits behind the Taj Mahal hotel, was the first target of the Islamist gunmen, selected because of its popularity with tourists and middle-class Indians.The backpacker hangout was thronged with customers when the militants burst in and opened fire.Eight people died and many more were wounded in the blizzard of bullets.The Leopold's co-owner, Farzad Shehriyar Jahani, said reopening the cafe was in defiance of the militants who had tried but failed, he said, to break Mumbai's spirit.[Farzad Shehriyar Jahani, Joint-owner, Cafe Leopold]:"By pulling the shutters down, by keeping the customers closed means they have won. No, I won't do that. My shutters have to go up and will go up. And I will serve my customers."But barely thirty minutes after reopening, the police came and insisted the cafe remain shut while the investigation is completed.It's unclear how long the Leopold will have to remain closed.

Ranking members of the government are resigning over allegations they didn't do enough to stop the violence.STORY:Dramatic pictures from inside the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, show armed guards protecting fire crews working to put out the remaining fires.As the clean-up gets underway, India is left to count the cost of a three-day siege where Islamist gunmen rampaged and killed nearly 200 people.Nine gunmen and 20 police and soldiers were also killed. A tenth militant was caught alive during three days of room-to-room fighting inside the Taj Mahal, one of several landmarks struck in co-ordinated attacks on Wednesday night.Anger at the intelligence failure and delayed response to the attacks prompted federal Home Minister Shivraj Patil to submit his resignation. Patil, seen here talking to news media on the first day, resigned because of the attacks, the ruling Congress party said. While ordinary Indians paid their respects outside the Taj Mahal hotel, political parties have been capitalizing on their anger and grief.The political fallout looks set to reverberate around the country.
