Directed by: Hideo GoshaContry: JapanThe protagonist of Cash Calls Hell, Oida (Tatsuya Nakadai) is serving time in prison after he killed a man and his daughter in a car accident. There he meets Sengoku who, after seeing Oida deftly fend off a knife attacker in the prison yard, knows he's the man for a job he has in mind. Once he leaves prison, he is to contact Utako, a hostess at a gentleman's club in Akiba. Oida knows nothing of what Sengoku wants or the history between Sengoku and Utako. Asking questions is forbidden he is told. The only answer from Oida Sengoku wants to hear is whether or not he will joins his path. He offers Oida a life again as Oida feels he has lost everything and has nothing left to live for on the outside.Upon release Oida tracks down Utako and is told by her that this 15 million yen job will be split three ways, 5 million each and then they will lead very happy lives. It's a beguiling premise for Oida. He's a man seemingly lost inside, haunted by the two people he killed. This contract is a chance at redemption for him. He is given the names of three men he is to kill. He knows not why Sengoku wants them dead, all he has to decide is if he wants to take the job. Oida accepts the job and makes his way towards the first man, Motoki at the docks. Oida's plan to off the drunken Motoki at night on the pier is complicated by a major development in the story. Two vicious killers from Hong Kong arrive on the scene and Otoki quickly learns that they have their own plan to take out these men and reclaim drug money ripped off from them two years prior. From this point on Cash Calls Hell really transforms into a visceral, fast paced adventure as well as a touching tale of redemption. This latter aspect bolstered by two notions. Firstly there is the wonderful performance by Tatsuya Nakadai as Oida. Nakadai infuses his character with such withered, weary, desolate pathos, anguish etched over his face, a wounded lupine gaze in his eyes. His performance coupled with director Hideo Gosha's expressive direction and visual flare lift Cash Calls Hell above the standard gangster/crime narrative. The second notion is the further plot complication in his having to care for Motoki's little girl. This lends Cash Calls hell a tender core and a strong humanistic streak amidst the more gruff and brutal exterior. The relationship he builds with the girl is his true redemption upon end.As mentioned Gosha's direction is very expressive and full of flare and there's a luminous sheen to the picture through the cinematography of Chu Sakai. {his only film credit funnily enough} The film is populated with protracted camera angles, often keeping a distance in the more menacing scenes. It often starts out peering through objects or pulling in tight on one before the characters enter the frame in the background. Gosha makes effective use of the industrial setting for many of the fight scenes in this respect. The flare here comes through the camera work in these fight scenes with its objective distance, overhead views and skewed angles. Elsewhere visually, the flare comes through the costuming, music and characterizations. Cash Calls Hell has a distinctly 1960's cinematic feel in these departments. The score is quirky, jazzy, pulsating and rhythmic, matching the brevity of the action. Gosha swiftly works through plot points, character arcs and locations with the precision and style of a samurai master, something not at all alien to him considering his other films.Cash Calls Hell personally appeals to me for its setting, somewhere I am familiar with from my own upbringing, there's a sense of companionship in that respect. Moreover this tale of redemption of the self, sense of place and a peace of mind amidst the chaos and carnage in Oida's world strikes a chord. It's a fun, stylish picture with a lot of heart, vim and vigor. Its vibrant, economical and satisfies one's need for entertainment devoid of clichéd sentiment. It's got a lean, existential bent to it, an all or nothing last chance saloon bravado that when applied to its own Eastern philosophy and setting produces something that blends sensibilities very well. This blend perhaps mirrors my own exotic mix of influences, styles, sounds, sights, rhythms and psychology along my own path. Cash Calls Hell is no kitchen sink approach though, it's a steady path, just one that happens to be populated with a distinct and even cool, unwavering outcome. It's an assured film by Gosha. Most of all it appeals personally because there just may be a little Oida in me echoing this desire for a kind of redemption that dredges the individual from the regrets, trappings and pitfalls of existence. In this respect, for me Cash Calls Hell acts as an anchor that salvages being and drives one on, determined and steadfast to the very end of the path.
