During 1952,Kaff's career was interrupted frequently by visits to hospital for extensive spells of treatment.Pain was becoming an increasing problem.Here she is singing a traditional folksong,arranged by Herbert Hughes.1952 was in some ways her finest year-----Switzerland many venues,Germany many venues, Paris,with Bruno Walter(Das Lied) Theatre Champs Elysees,Royal Festival Hall many times,Vienna recording of Das Lied,Royal Albert Hall with Vienna Phil(Kindertotenlieder) Furtwangler AND Clemens Krauss!Royal Albert Hall again,St.Matthew Passion.Edinburgh International Festival---Usher Hall-- Brahms songs with Seefried and Patzak---Messiah, Dream of Gerontius with the Halle Orchestra.BBC Proms,Royal Albert Hall,London,Brahm's Serious Songs.On top of all that she recorded her Last Recordings,at the Kingsway Hall,London,October 7/8th October--Bach and Handel Arias with Adrian Boult conducting.On my site.The list looks almost endless.I have her letters and diaries.This recording is credited 1952,but I can't find Kaff's entry for it.However she did record three or four programmes for the BBC in 1952 to which she refers,so perhaps it's from one of the BBC sessions.The voice does sound 1952,rather than a few years earlier,at the start of her career,when she recorded many English Folksongs.Whichever way---It's unmistakeable 'Klever Kaff',and glorious.Kathleen Ferrier.Contralto.1912----8th.October,1953,London.Died aged 41 years.Her elder sister Winifred who did so much to teach younger generations about her sister,died in London,1995.Frederick Stone--piano.I ha'e a wee brig o' praties,An' I ha'e a liggat o' meal,An' I ha'e a pig in the corner,An' he's tied to a tuppenny nail.O!
