1957: Shirley Bassey recorded and released the these two Philips Label singles, 'My Heart She Is Crying' and 'Fire Down Below' in 1957. My Heart.. was the Side (B) track with Side (A) being, 'If I Had A Needle and Thread.' Of the two songs, this one is my personal favorite. Her next recording session included 'Fire Down Below' which was the side (A) track with Side (B) being, 'You, You Romeo.' From 1953 thru 1958 when Shirley received her first Number 1 Hit, 'As I Love You' was a time of gaining experience, learning, and finding that style that would be her very own. And, the word was VERY, VERY HARD as Shirley would go from town to town wondering if she and her manager would have enough money to pay all the costs associated with traveling around the world. While in the USA her manager, Michael Sullivan, hired publicity agent Ed Gollin for introduce Shirley to some important people in Manhanttan. He took Shirley to see Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra and was able to negotiate a recording session with Musical Great, Mitch Miller. As stated above, this was a time for discovery and Shirley was having a hard time getting the phrasing right for either the 'My Heart...OR IF I had a Needle..) song. Finally, they all were able to muddle through it, but history shows us that the Mitch Miller sound was not what Shirley would eventually become famous for. Right after the session, up they went and flew to Las Vegas to do a stint at the El Rancho. Shirley's next single, 'Fire Down Below' was more upbeat with a good beat and it received more notice. The song actually hit the charts at #30. And, besides the single release this song was also released on Shirley's 'Bewitching Miss Bassey' album. The song is from the feature film "Fire Down Below" (1957). It starred Hollywood acting legends Robert Mitchum as Felix and Jack Lemmon as Tony, two men who own a boat in the Caribbean and sail around having fun whilst being involved in various illegal dealings. They encounter a good-looking woman, Irena, played by another legend of the silver screen, Rita Hayworth, whom both the pair subsequently fall for. This leads to an inevitable break-up of their friendship and a series of terrifying events. In a bizarre coincidence, the film also starred Anthony Newley, who together with Leslie Bricusse wrote one of Shirley Bassey's biggest hits, What Kind Of Fool Am I? (from the stage show "Stop The World, I Want To Get Off").
