STORY:24 years after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the survivors' campaign for justice goes on.Protesters marched through the central Indian town to the gates of the defunct Union Carbide factory, site of the world's worst industrial disaster, where nearly 4,000 people died after a massive toxic gas leak, leaving thousands more maimed for life.Almost a quarter of a century on and the factory site, now owned by Dow Chemical, has never been fully cleaned up. Poisonous waste has since contaminated ground water, affecting a new generation of Bhopal's citizens.Survivors are urging Dow Chemical, which took over Union Carbide in 2001, to take responsibility for the Bhopal cleanup.[Rasida Bi, Gas Victim]:"Today we demand that Dow Chemical should take responsibility to clean uo the poisonous garbage. Also, we demand the Indian government give medical treatment and rehabilitation to the victims of the tragedy." In the immediate aftermath of the accident, Union Carbide accepted moral responsibility for the tragedy and established a $100 million charitable trust fund to build a hospital for victims. The Indian government took the American company to court, where it sought more than 3 billion (US) dollars as compensation.But after a lengthy court battle, the case was settled for a fraction of the amount, Union Carbide agreed to pay just 470 million dollars. After 24 years of fighting for compensation and support, the Indian government recently agreed to set up a commission to investigate the long term medical, economic and social rehabilitation of victims.Crucially, the government is said to have promised protest leaders that it will once again press Dow Chemical on its liability for the Bhopal disaster.
