The growth rate of a population of any given species is not determined by simple biotic potential, that is to say, the maximum possible reproductive rate of the population. In reality, the growth rate of a population is almost entirely based on what is called carrying capacity. A carrying capacity is the number of organisms a habitat can support given it's available resources. However, lets give aaron's way of thinking a try. The bacterium PSEUDOMONAS NATRIEGENS has a generation time of slightly less than 10 minutes, that means that every ten minutes a population of this bacteria can double itself, under optimal circumstances. If aaron is correct in his population projections, a culture of that bacteria that started with only 1 organism should be able to fill the earth's oceans in less than 1 day.Now, I may be off by a bit on the calculation. I didn't know exactly how large this particular bacterium was so I used a normal size for a bacteria (about a 1 micron radius). I then looked up the volume of the Earth's oceans and using simple division could find how many of the bacteria would be required to fill it. After I had this number, I could use the formula [final number(time)=initial number X 2 ^ (time / doubling time)] to find time, which was about 23 hours. I may be off on the math some but I think that you can all still see the point.
