Background: From November 9th - November 30th, 2008, Barefoot Workshops led a three-week program in Tel Aviv, teaching Israeli organizations how to write, shoot, produce, and edit, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), to raise awareness about important social issues. Nine PSAs were produced on such topics as: human rights, sexual education for teens through the Internet, bridging Jewish and Arab-Israeli youths through the arts, equal opportunity for Ethiopian Jews, building the capacity of nonprofits, and supporting women-owned businesses in Israel. The aim of the workshop was to foster greater civic participation, activism, and debate by teaching civil society organizations how to create messages that can improve their societies from within. The workshop was supported by the United States Government Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), and Creative Associates International.Description: This 45-second PSA, created by FIDEL Association for Education and Social Integration of Ethiopian Jews in Israel, was directed by an Ethiopian-Jewish immigrant, and is meant to encourage his younger peers to achieve a better future for themselves through higher education and successful career choices. It tracks the main character, Zemene, as he walks down the sidewalk, and looks out over an urban landscape. Meanwhile he says, My name is Zemene. I immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia in 1984, after a difficult journey. Without family, and only a basic education, I had many challenges including language and cultural barriers. As the narrative continues, Zemene ascends an escalator and enters the offices of FIDEL Association, a support center for Ethiopian-Jewish immigrants. But after many years of hard work, he continues, sitting at his desk, I achieved my Masters Degree in Public Administration. Now I am one of the directors at FIDEL Association. He picks up his framed graduation certificate, and smiles into the camera as he delivers his message, Now I can say for sure, that Education is the key to success! Zemene opens the doors of FIDEL, to invite inside a young man. Therefore, I extend my hand to my younger brothers to say, You can do it too! The two embrace and the final tag line reads, From dreams to reality. Director: Zemene Achihon, Xanthe Steen & Ronit Ben-tal Email: zemenea@gmail.com URL: www.fidel.org.il Music arranged by Nabeel BahyPSAs are available upon request, in English and Hebrew, to broadcasters and organizations who wish to distribute them rights-free. It presents three candidates for work, against a plain white background. Each individual working in areas of business, academics and accounting respectively, appears overly qualified for employment. The PSA begs the question, [Are these qualifications] not enough? The final message is that Diversity is the key to Success.Director: Yaser Awad & Nidaa Talib Email: awad_y@netvision.net.il / nidaatalbg@hotmail.comURL: www.sikkuy.org.il PSAs are available upon request, in English and Hebrew, to broadcasters and organizations who wish to distribute them rights-free.
