Because of my degree and my own personal experience, I know that the biggest impediment to obtaining employment is transportation. I hope that this new cab company for persons with disabilities is approved as there is a great need in Las Vegas for reliably safe and reasonably priced transportation. Living in LV is a huge challenge for persons with disabilities, and I know from personal experience how treacherous and dangerous it can be. I was struck by a truck while crossing the street in my motorized wheelchair. I was crossing the street in the crosswalk. I am fortunate to be alive, as other people in wheelchairs who have been struck are usually dead. Cab companies are often unreliable and a 4 hour wait is not uncommon. Extreme heat in the summer makes it nearly impossible to wait outside for that long for persons like me, that have to use a wheelchair and have to wait for a cab. It is also difficult to get a cab from a rural area, as they are usually on the strip. Actually, the new cab company could help the local economy by providing reliable transportation for persons with disabilities and enable us to be more self-sufficient, freeing up the regular cabs to provide service to those who are not disabled. There are also other persons with disabilities, who are not able to qualify for paratransit because they use motorized chairs, who would benifit from this service. "My name is Brad. I am the oldest of three sons. My younger brothers are Wes and Matt.On October 9, 2008, I booked a flight to my hometown to surprise my parents. I moved from Frankfort, Kentucky, to Las Vegas in August 2004, but during the last four years I had only been home for a few short visits. The previous year had been especially rough on my mother. She went through a difficult surgery and the ensuing rehabilitation. Our family had also experienced some personal tragedy.Southwest Airlines Flight 3142 departed Las Vegas bound for Frankfort at approximately 1:40 PM PST, on November 12. Several nonstop hours later, I arrived at Louisville International Airport where my youngest brother, Matt, was waiting to give me a lift.En route to Frankfort, we stopped at his home in Shelbyville, Kentucky, to pick up his wife, Tanya. At the same time, my brother, Wes, was traveling westbound on I-64 from Lexington, Kentucky, to meet us at a gas station near my parent's home. A few minutes before 10 PM EST, we rolled into the subdivision where I grew up from July, 1986, at the ripe old age of 10. We parked our cars at the bottom of the hill near the edge of our long driveway and slipped into the darkness.About 10:05PM, Wes rang the doorbell and knocked a couple of times. "I was in town and thought I'd spend the night. I brought a little surprise with me." Our dad just stood there in the foyer, no doubt thrilled but mostly thoroughly perplexed. Before he could even begin to process what was going on or say more than a few words, Matt walked around the corner with a huge grin on his face. Moments later I followed suit, and that's where this video clip begins...P.S. Wes is the cameraman for the majority of the video and Matt has the beard.P.P.S. I was a little out of it, having not slept the night before the surprise visit. I am also literally shaking with excitement as I handle the camera at the beginning of the video. ♥"
