LOS ANGELES - The grieving mother of a Missouri girl told a jury Wednesday how her daughter hanged herself with a belt after receiving cruel messages on her MySpace account, some of which were from a boy whose identity was later revealed to have been invented by a neighbor.Tina Meier recounted how "Josh Evans" interacted online with her 13-year-old daughter, Megan, during the first day of the trial against Lori Drew, who is accused of taking part in the Internet hoax that prosecutors say led to Megan's suicide.Meier said after a name-calling exchange between Megan, "Josh," and two other girls in October 2006, she told a sobbing Megan, who was being treated for attention deficit disorder and depression, that she wasn't supposed to be online and shouldn't have gotten into the argument."The last words she said to me were 'You are supposed to be my mom, you are supposed to be on my side,"' Meier said as she tried to hold back tears.Meier said she ran later upstairs and found Megan hanging in the closet with a belt around her neck. She died the next day.Drew, 49, has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing computers without authorization. Each count carries a potential sentence of five years in prison. In his opening statement to jurors, U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien said Drew helped create "Josh's" false identity on MySpace to learn if Megan was spreading malicious rumors on MySpace about Sarah Drew, the defendant's then 13-year-old daughter.O'Brien said the evidence will show Drew opened the MySpace account and "fully intended to hurt and prey on Megan's psyche."For the first time, O'Brien disclosed what Megan wrote after allegedly receiving a message the day she killed herself that said the world would be better off without her. Megan sent a response saying, "'You are the kind of boy a girl would kill herself over,"' O'Brien said.Prosecutors said it's the nation's first cyber-bullying trial and its results could set a legal precedent for dealing with the issue of online harassment.Defense attorney Dean Steward told jurors Drew did not violate the Computer Use and Fraud Act — used in the past to address computer hacking — and reminded them she was not facing charges dealing with the suicide."This is not a homicide case," Steward said. Before the trial began, Steward tried to get U.S. District Judge George Wu to forbid mention of the suicide. Wu rejected the request but instructed jurors the case is about whether Drew violated MySpace's terms of service, not about whether she caused Megan's suicide. After jurors were dismissed for the day, Steward unsuccessfully requested a mistrial, saying the emotional testimony was "totally improper in a computer fraud case."Prosecutors said Drew conspired with her daughter and Drew's then 18-year-old assistant, Ashley Grills, to invent "an attractive male teenager" on MySpace to find out what was being said about Sarah.Meier said she was concerned about "Josh," who had contacted Megan in early September 2006 wanting to be her friend. She added she thought her daughter was developing feelings for "Josh," but when there was a conversation that may have had sexual overtures, Meier contacted local authorities about the teen boy."Something wasn't right," Meier testified.Local authorities never pursued the incident, Meier said.Steward countered it was Grills who set up the MySpace account and his client was driving home when the message about the world being a better place without Megan was sent. Grills has been granted immunity to testify. The case is being prosecuted in Los Angeles because MySpace computer servers are based in the area.

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- With his webcam trained on him, a Florida teenager died in his bed of a drug overdose while others watched over the Internet, officials said Friday. Some of those watching urged him to take more drugs while others debated whether he had taken enough to kill himself. Hours passed before someone finally notified authorities that he appeared lifeless, officials said. The teenager was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon in Pembroke Pines, Florida, said Wendy Crane, investigator for the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office. The cause of death was found to be an overdose of benzodiazepine, an antidepressant, as well as other opiate drugs used to treat depression, Crane said. CNN is not reporting the teenager's name. The youth's body was found in his apartment behind a locked door, which police broke down. Police turned off the webcam and computer, Crane said. She said he did not take anything on camera, according to footage she reviewed, but he blogged between 3 and 4 a.m. Wednesday that he had taken an overdose of drugs. He also posted a suicide note.He was seen lying on his bed on the streaming video, posted on the Web site Justin.tv. On the site, a person can stream video from a Web camera while "viewers" chat with each other in a box next to the video, Crane said. The comments and video have since been removed from the Web site.Crane read the comments posted during the 10 hours the youth could be seen lying on his bed.As the teenager was lying on his bed, she said, people were typing things like, "Oh, that's not enough to kill you." Others, she said, were egging him on, saying things like "Go ahead and do it." Still others thought it wasn't real, Crane said.About 11 a.m. Wednesday, Crane said, some viewers began to get concerned, writing things like, "He's not moving" and "He's not breathing."One contacted the site's moderator to get the youth's contact information, she said, and the police were notified. The teen "has made threats in the past regarding suicide and possibly had previous attempts," she said.Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said in a statement, "we regret that this has occurred and want to respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time."Pembroke Pines police Sgt. John Gazzano said the case is under investigation.Broward County Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Perper said the teen may have stood a chance of surviving had someone notified authorities right away."If somebody had come immediately after he took tablets, then probably not all the tablets would have been absorbed. Then, therefore, they could wash his stomach and get rid of the additional tablets. Certainly, he would have had a much better chance."The youth's father said he is "appalled" that people watched and did nothing."I wish they would have given him the assistance that he was crying out for," the father said. "They did not respond to him. They only did long after the fact."He said his son, who attended Broward Community College and wanted to be a paramedic, had bipolar disorder and was being treated for depression. The father dismissed the suggestion that people thought the video was fake. "It was not fake, was it? You don't assume. You have to find out if it was true or false."Perper said the existence of a note left no doubt that the young man committed suicide."He left a note, which is very clear. And our examination did not reveal any evidence of trauma or any evidence of natural disease on internal examination. And we did a screen of the urine, which revealed the presence of medication, mostly antidepressant drugs," Perper said.

David Letterman's Katie Couric interview made headlines for Couric talking about Sarah Palin but many, including the New York Post, were surprised that Letterman didn't talk about John McCain, and the infamous night when McCain lied to Letterman and ditched him to "return to Washington immediately," only for Letterman to find him in Couric's interview chair later that day.Letterman fixed that Thursday night by calling Couric â who was "just hanging around, watching Oprah" â to discuss that night."I was all prepped to chat with you about this and you had brain synapse misfirings," Couric told him."Dave, I had no idea he was booked on your show," Couric said. "So, you know, he called me on my cell phone - does he have your cell phone number, Dave? He said, listen, I'm suspending my campaign, and he told me why, and I said, Senator McCain, that's interesting. You're in New York, why don't you come and do an interview so you can tell the American people rather than just tell me? Had I known he had made a commitment to you...I would've said, by all means, go do Dave's show. ""I think you were in on this," Letterman said."I promise you. I had no idea until you apparently had a little cow on the air with Keith Olbermann," she responded. "And then you did that creepy Big Brother thing by stealing our video."Dave also complained that he was left to talk to Keith Olbermann, to which Couric responded, "I feel for you, Dave."

BLOOMFIELD, Ind. â Three male and three female inmates at a southern Indiana jail face charges that they devised a way to sneak between cell blocks to help pass their time behind bars by having sex.The inmates figured out how to remove metal ceiling panels in the Greene County Jail and used the passageway more than a dozen times in September and October, according to court documents. The men â ages 44, 38 and 17 â and the women â ages 27, 26 and 21 â crawled through the ceiling after midnight, having sexual encounters and drinking homemade alcohol that was found hidden in the male cell block, a police affidavit said. One male inmate who was not charged said the female inmates would "hang-out, play cards or have sex with some of the male inmates" in their cell block, the affidavit said. The inmates were able to find a security camera "blind spot" where they could remove ceiling tiles and create a passage between the cell blocks, Sheriff Terry Pierce said Tuesday. The inmates used a shower drain as a tool to loosen security screws and the ceiling tiles were carefully replaced so they did not appear to be disturbed, Pierce said."We could not see it," he said. The ceiling panels have since been secured, and Pierce said he was seeking funding to improve security at the jail, which was built in 1994 in the city about 25 miles southeast of Bloomington.Pierce called the inmates' activities "embarrassing" to himself and his staff."If your facility has a flaw, if you house prisoners in it, they will show you. They will find it," he said. "We're going to have to find a way to have a better security system."Prosecutors have filed felony escape charges against the six inmates, who were awaiting trial on a variety of charges. Five of the inmates remain in the Greene County Jail, while one has been transferred to the Monroe County Jail in Bloomington.Pierce said the investigation is ongoing and other current or former jail inmates may be charged.
