Kevin Rusts story is remarkable. Clincally dead for 45 minutes and in a coma for days, the 52-year-olds wife was told to prepare for a funeral.They told me I had to make a decision, Elizabeth Rust said. I didnt want to have him to live like a shell.But today, Kevin Rust is walking, talking and sharing his experience six weeks after a massive heart attack Oct. 6 that should have hilled him.Hes very fortunate to be alive with his previous heart conditions, Rajul Patel, a doctor with Phoenix Heart. Rust survived a quadruple bypass heart surgery years ago. When he came into Banner Thunderbird hospital, he had been without oxygen for nearly an hour. Doctors worked to resuscitate Rust. They inserted stints or small coils - into his veins and shocked his heart. They then hooked him to a new machine that lowered his body to freezing temperatures.Its a procedure called therapeutic hypothermia, which works to decrease the damage to cells after a heart attack.This is one of the only things proven to increase survival in cardiac arrest patients, Banner Thunderbird doctor Christine Sellberg said. But Rust didnt immediately show a promising response to the procedure. He remained in a coma for three days, moving from the emergency room to intensive care and eventually hospice. It was at that point that Elizabeth and other family members prepared for the worst. After spending the night next to his bed, Elizabeth woke up and said to him: Honey, I love you and I wish you could hear me.But then, the Rusts say a miracle happened. Kevin shook his head up and down.I was like, oh my god, and I thought I better say this again, Elizabeth Rust said. And I did, and he responded, and I was thrilled and so happy.Now Kevin Rust said hes embracing live, refusing to take it for granted. The man upstairs has something in store for me, he said. Im going to try and find out what it is.
