The Piano tells the story of a Scottish woman, Ada McGrath (Hunter), whose father sold into marriage to a man, Alistair Stewart (Neill), and was sent with his young daughter Flora (Paquin) and her piano to live with him to New Zealand. Ada has not said a word since the age of six, replacing his speech by the music of the piano, while her daughter serves as a translator in his communication through sign language. Her new husband for not being able to transport it to Ada forced to leave the piano at the beach, where she, her daughter and their belongings have been abandoned by the crew of the boat in which they have come from Scotland. After the piano is sold to George Baines (Keitel), a neighbor of Stewart and fan of piano music, Geroge Baines asks Ada to give him piano lessons.
