A distinct letdown from their previous MGM films, the Marx Bros.' At the Circus nonetheless contains intermittent moments of high hilarity. When Jeff Wilson (Kenny Baker) is in danger of losing his circus to crooked creditor Carter (James Burke), Jeff's faithful roustabout Antonio (Chico Marx) enlists the aid of seedy attorney J. Cheever Loophole (Groucho Marx). Despite the best efforts of Loophole, Antonio and general hanger-on Punchy (Harpo Marx), Jeff is robbed of the circus payroll by two flies in the ointment, Goliath the Strong Man (Nat Pendleton) and Little Professor Atom (Jerry Marenghi, later known as Jerry Maren). Also in on the plot to wrest control of the circus is aerialist Peerless Pauline (Eve Arden), with whom Loophole has a cozy tete-a-tete while walking on the ceiling (no kidding!) In a last-ditch effort to raise the necessary funds, Loophole romances Jeff's wealthy aunt Mrs. Dukesbury (Margaret Dumont). The finale takes place at a fancy society party at the Dukesbury mansion, with Punchy and Antonio hijacking the scheduled entertainment and replacing it with a full-fledged circus performance. Weighed down by an excess of plot and a surfeit of misfire gags, not to mention one of sappiest romantic subplots in film history (involving sappy tenor Kenny Baker and sappier ingenue Florence Rice), At the Circus still keeps audiences happy with Groucho's rendition of the deathless "Lydia the Tatooed Lady" (by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg) and the zany denoument, wherein pompous conductor Fritz Feld and his orchestra are set adrift in the middle of the ocean and the magnificent Margaret Dumont is shot out of a cannon. Best gag: When Eve Arden stuffs the circus payroll into her blouse, Groucho turns to the camera and whispers "There must be some way of getting that money back without offending the Hays Office."Groucho Marx - J. * Maddies POV * I was walking to her next class, science ugh gag I hate that class but my teachers pretty cool so maybe today wont be so bad I got to the door and I put my hand on the knob and the bell rang Dang it! Ugh I opened the door to see my science teacher with his hands on his hips ( haha my science teacher seriously does this ) Mr. Greco: where have you been! Maddie: Umm I was umm * looks at her feet * Mr. Greco: Making out with a boy mmmhhm I get it just dont get into a bar fight with taller guys Maddie: * laughs * No I wasnt making out with a boy!Mr. Greco: A girl?Maddie: * Laughs * Eww no Mr. G I dont roll like that Mr. Greco: Okay go sit with Mr. Jonas hes your new lab partner My jaw dropped I looked up and saw nick sitting there ugh this couldnt get any worse Maddie: Are you serious? Mr. Greco: Yea now go sit I sighed and took my stuff and went and sat beside Nick Mr. Greco: Okay Kids its lab time instructions are on the board * in an Indian accent * Ready Set GO!!Maddie: Looks like we have to work together Nick: * Nods *Maddie: Okay so what are we doing?Nick: Were fixing that stuff with that stuff and see what happens Maddie: Sounds easy Nick: Yeah * They both reach for the same beaker at the same time there hands touched and Nick looked up at Maddie and she looked at Nick and they both pulled there hands away fast causing the beaker to nock over *Mr. Greco: Smooth! * Scottish accent * Clean it up Maddie: Ooops my bad * They grab a bunch of paper towels and clean it up then Maddie goes and refills the beaker with the liquid and goes back to the table *Maddie: Okay lets try this again Nick: Yeah * Pours one of the beakers in the empty beaker * Okay now pour the other one in Maddie: Okay * Starts to pour the other beaker in slowly and Nick puts his hand on the beaker and helps her *( still maddies POV )I couldnt believe this! Nick Jonas my lab partner! I thought I could get away from him. I could feel his big ripped muscles on my shoulder it started give me flash backs of all the good times we had and the reasons why I fell in love with him were coming clear to me. I wish I could be back in them but I really dont know what I want he probably hates me now what am I thinking hell probably never give me the time of day But do I really want him back? I think I never thought I could hate someone and love them at the same time till I met Nick. What was I doing? I was stuck on are rollercoaster of emotions even though we werent on the ride together anymore I was still on the ride I didnt know if I wanted to find him or jump off Nick: Maddie! Maddie!Maddie: Huh?Nick: The beakers kind of over flowing I looked down at what I was doing and saw the beaker full to the brim and liquid flowing over the edges I pulled my hand away Maddie: Oh snap!
