We provide a 24-hour search and rescue service out to 100 nautical miles from the coast of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and since the RNLI was founded in 1824, our lifeboat crews have saved more than 137,000 lives.The RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, needs your support to train and equip its volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards.The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to fund its work, and the UK lifeboat service receives no Government funding.It costs £1,000 a year to train each of the RNLIs 4,500 volunteer lifeboat crew members, and only one in 10 crew members has a professional maritime occupation.The RNLIs annual running costs are £339,000 per day and, as a registered charity, the organisation continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.Get involved with RNLI SOS Day on Friday 30 January 2009 and help the charity that rescues an average of 21 people at sea every day.
