CHAN:It's that time of the year when Japanese whalers head south. They are heading to the Southern Ocean where close to 1,000 endangered whales are likely to be killed. But the anti-whaling activists are also getting ready to leave. And this time they have a U.S actress on board to help. Here's more.STORY:These hard-line anti-whaling activists are preparing to pursue Japan's Antarctic whaling fleet. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has clashed with Japanese before. But this year they have actress Daryl Hannah on board. [Darryl Hannah, Actress]: "Obviously there's really not much use being a public figure if you can't take the light that shines on you and shine it on something of more importance."Hannah, who starred in the 1980s films Blade Runner and Splash, will travel part-way on Sea Shepherd's flagship the Steve Irwin. In past years the protesters have been criticized for their pirate style actions against the Japanese. There are rumors that a Japanese patrol boat will escort this year's whaling fleet.[Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd Founder]: "But I don't care if they send the whole Japanese navy down there; we are not going to retreat from this."Australia's government says it will not monitor the Japanese fleet this year because of protests from Tokyo last year. So Sea Shepherd will be all alone during this year's five-month hunt.
