CALABASAS, Calif. -- Smokey has quite a bit to say. The 2-year-old bird can imitate his owner's voice to a perfect pitch, and he likes to mock other birds and the family dog, too.Nothing too unusual for an African Grey parrot, an intelligent bird that is known for its cognitive abilities and extensive vocabulary.However, Smokey also has a penchant for television, politics and one particular presidential nominee.Whenever Sen. Barack Obama (D- Ill.) appears on television, Smokey goes wild."We were watching something, showing some speech, whatever, and when he hears it he gets like, 'Yes, yes, yes!' And 'Obama! Obama! Yes, we can, yes, we can, yes!' Like that, really emphatic," his owner, Doug Dilg, of Calabasas, said.Dilg and his wife, Sookie, have been Obama supporters long before the Senator announced his bid for presidency.He suspects Smokey might have picked up on their own enthusiasm, but thinks that he also draws from the emotional spirit at televised rallies and events."If you listen to McCain's stuff with him, it doesn't seem like there is the same level of excitement and there is certainly no response," Dilg said. "There is a certain background noise to those [Obama] rallies and those events. It's the bare sound of the excitement that gets him going."Smokey replies to certain vocal cues, like when Dilg's wife, Sookie, says "Smokey Bird," and he echoes her with "Pretty Bird."He also says good morning and good night at appropriate hours of the day and knows when it is time for the family dog Copper, a Korean Jindo, to go on his evening walk."When it comes to around 5:30 to 6:30 in the evening, he will go 'Copper, you want to go for a walk?' Basically telling us to take Copper for a walk," Dilg said.But the chatty bird has his own limitations and won't always speak in front of unfamiliar people.So the Dilgs placed a video camera in front of the bird's perch for one hour and left the room, hoping to show their East Coast relatives Smokey's vocal chops.They placed the video on YouTube and within weeks its number of viewer hits skyrocketed. Smokey appeared on CNN and was also featured in political blogs, like DailyKos.com and Wonkette.Almost 200,000 viewers have since logged on to watch the gray bird say, "Yes we can.""It's remarkable, it really is," Dilg said.
